Mastering the Shadows and Light of Hallownest
Hollow Knight’s unique art style relies heavily on the contrast between pitch-black shadows and glowing, ethereal light. Use these advanced coloring techniques to make your fan art look incredibly authentic!
- The Abyssal Void: Characters like the Knight and the Hollow Knight are made of pure Void. Instead of using a flat black marker, layer a deep indigo or dark purple underneath a dark gray colored pencil. This gives the Void a rich, bottomless texture that looks incredible on paper.
- The Blinding Radiance: When coloring The Radiance or Infected enemies, the bright orange Infection needs to pop. Start with a bright yellow core and softly blend outward into a fiery orange. Leave a thin white halo around the edges of the light to make it look like it’s truly glowing.
- Atmospheric Glows: For the soft lumafly lanterns or the pale blue glow of the Lifeblood, use soft pastel pencils. Blend the edges of the light gently into the dark background using a blending stump or a cotton swab to create a misty, subterranean atmosphere.
- Weathered Armor: Bosses like the False Knight or the Dung Defender wear heavily battered armor. Use shades of brown and rust to add weathering. Draw tiny scratches with a fine-tipped black pen and highlight the edges of the dents with a white gel pen to make the metal look ancient and battle-worn.
